"What's this 'Delcare Blockers' nonsense?" Thanks to vehicles and exert, along with a huge number of high-power, low-toughness 2-drops, the format shifted to full-on aggro. But, with no meaningful graveyard interaction of any kind, Delirium decks with ], ], and ] kept a stranglehold on the format.įinally, with Tarkir leaving, we come to Kaladesh and Amonkhet, a.k.a. Shadows over Innistrad didn't help matters all that much, though it did give us ], the first ] effect in nearly 10 years (after Time Spiral's ]). It wasn't until Battle for Zendikar that Standard really became a shitshow, with Eldrazi ramp decks manhandling control out of the meta for over two years, thanks to Ulamog taking two permanents whether you counter him or not. Then Abzan got fairly dominant when Tarkir replaced RTR, but nothing super degenerate, I think. Zendikar/Scars gave us Caw Blade, which caused the first Standard Bannings in 6 years, with Jace and Stoneforge getting the axe.įortunately, after that time, Standard was actually in a good place up until RTR/Theros, when we had to deal with Blue and Black Devotion decks. A gloriously greedy deck that ran cards costing 2GGGG, 1UUU, UUBBBRR at the same time. Pivoting to Lorwyn/Alara, though, gave us 5-color control. Shortly thereafter, Time Spiral/Lorwyn brought us Faeries, with Morningtide's ] being the real killer card in the deck, pushing it over the top. Mirrodin/Kamigawa brought us the scourge of Affinity and ], as all the answer cards WotC seeded into Kamigawa (], ], and a few others) to fight Affinity were basically useless. Onslaught weakened the deck somewhat as ] left with Invasion, but that just brought the rise of Goblins and Elves, instead. Invasion/Odyssey gave us ], a Blue/Black tempo/control deck that used ] to reset the board and floated mana to put a lethal 'Tog on the board with the opponent having little to no recourse. Of course, the combos weren't completely stomped out, as ] decks still created problems, especially with Prophecy's ] to allow them to draw another 19 cards. It was also the cause of the one emergency ban in Magic, ], because of how absurd that made the deck. Tempest/Urza standard gave us Combo Winter, with the ] deck that could kill on turn one or two consistently. Of course, there was also Pros/Bloom, decks that used ] with ] to fuel gigantic ]s. Ice Age/Mirage standard was the home of Necro Summer, where primarily black-based aggro decks used the power of ] to refuel their hands after running out of cards, basically throttling away anything else. Having played for over 20 years, there have been a number of them. r/magicTCG is not produced, endorsed, supported by, or affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
